For the first time in 20 years, the pay gap widened in 2023. Women working full time, year-round were paid 83 cents for every dollar paid to men in 2023.
The gender pay gap remains stubbornly persistent, costing women—especially women of color—thousands in lost wages each year.
The Paycheck Fairness Act would strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963. This critical legislation would:
- Ban retaliation against workers who discuss their wages, so employees can advocate for fair pay without fear.
- Ensure women can seek the same legal remedies for sex-based pay discrimination as those facing race- or ethnicity-based discrimination.
- Prohibit employers from using salary history to set pay, stopping past discrimination from following women from job to job.
